Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT originates in the following two premises:

  • Helps reclaim unwanted self-experience, and change problematic emotional states and interactions.

  • Developing strategies to promote awareness, acceptance, expression, and transforming emotion. The goal is to strengthen the self, regulate affect, and creating new meaning.

We believe in the extraordinary healing powers of understanding our emotions.

  • The processes and outcomes of emotion-focused interventions, especially Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

  • Investigating youth and caregiver well-being, the therapeutic relationship, and therapy outcomes.

 FAQs

  • IDENTIFY AND EXPRESS EMOTIONS EFFICIENTLY

Helps clients become more aware of their emotions, develop the ability to better identify and express them. Many individuals struggle with recognizing and labeling their emotions, which makes it difficult to understand and manage them. Exploring and reflecting on these emotions in EFT, clients learn to identify and articulate their feelings, promoting emotional regulation.

UNDERSTAND UNDERLYING MEANING AND FUNCTION OF EMOTIONS

Each emotion provides a purpose, such as communicating with others, or signalling a need. By exploring the context and trigger of these emotions, EFT can allow clients to gain insight into the meaning of their emotions, allowing them to better influence their behaviour and relationships.

    REGULATE INTENSE EMOTIONS

Teaches clients techniques to regulate their emotions, such as deep breathing, relaxation exercises, mindfulness practices, and cognitive reappraisal. This allows clients to handle overwhelming emotions and respond more adaptively to challenging situations.

    TRANSFORM MALADAPTIVE EMOTIONAL PATTERNS

We begin by identifying and challenging dysfunctional patterns of emotional experiencing (e.g. suppression). Then, through therapeutic exploration and processing, clients can shift these patterns toward healthier and more adaptive ways of relating to their emotions.

    • Increased emotional awareness

    • Improved emotional regulation

    • Enhanced self-understanding

    • Transformation of maladaptive patterns

    • Relief from psychological distress

    • Strengthened relationships

    • Long-lasting change

  • In a traditional therapeutic setting, a client with a mental health challenge will work with a therapist to improve their condition, often independently. In Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), we focus on transforming emotional patterns, fostering greater emotional resilience.
